Constructs of God
In about 60 AD, a novel idea developed in Christianity. Arius and his followers challenged the prevaling idea of the Trinity by teaching that although Jesus was the Son of God, he was still just a man — not co-equal to God. Thus began what was called the Arian Heresy. Although very controversial at that time, this schism is little more than a historical footnote today.
Exodus 20:2-4 begins the presentation of the Ten Commandments:
2 "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 "You shall have no other gods before [besides] me. 4 "You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
The first rule is to have no other Gods. This is followed by exposition of what that means. Constructing images in the form of “anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below” was strictly prohibited.
Yes, a Golden Calf is an example of the verboten, but all physical artifacts begin as images in the mind. And all ideas and concepts of God fall short of true description. Life, Reality, and/or God (however you refer to “What is”) cannot contained by any human construct.
Any analogy, description, label, we attempt to place on God is NOT God.
Jesus Christ is a construct.
The Holy Spirit is a construct.
God the Father is a construct.
So is Buddha, Shiva, Allah, The Big Bang, and Quantum Physics. These things may or may not be helpful to navigate life, but none of them accurately describe reality. All characterizations fail.
Arguments about the divinity of Jesus are pointless. Debate about whether there is or isn’t a God are pointless. Or rather, they point the wrong way: towards classification, labels, and conceptual models rather than pure experiential realization.
The logical conclusion of the second commandment is to eliminate all images and constructs used as placeholders in the mind. The Hindus refer to this as Neti Neti — a Sanskrit expression which means "not this, not that." Negate all the constructs cluttering your mind.
Realize the nature of God by negating everything that is not God.
Realize the nature of Reality by negating everything that is not Reality.
